As the title implies, this is my first post. The purpose of this blog will be to give you a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how I, as one writer, approach creative writing.
The hope is that some of my tactics will be of use to you (if you too are an aspiring novelist) or simply shine a light on some of the lesser-discussed aspects of being an author.
Frequency of Posts
I’ll aim to post to the blog once every other week. I have a full-time day job in addition to my writing, which doesn’t leave me ample time to dedicate to blogging.
Content
As for the content of the posts, here is a smattering of the general topics to expect, in no particular order:
- How I get ideas for projects (both novels and shorter forms)
- How I approach the actual process of writing
- How I conduct research (including calculations for the more hard sci-fi aspects of my works)
- My inspirations from other mediums (music, TV, movies, books, video games, art, etc.)
- Details on my current and planned projects
- Morsels about me and how I got into writing in the first place
My Writing
As for what I write about, if I want to distill it down to the basics, it’s science fiction.
But it’s also more than that. I’m heavily influenced by literary fiction. Victorian era writing was my first passion as a reader in grade school. Think Dickens, the Bronte sisters, and Jane Austen. I migrated into reading science fiction through the likes of the elders of the genre, namely H.G. Wells and Jules Verne.
In more recent times, I lean towards reading more modern writing, in both genre and literary fiction. I also enjoy aspects of fantasy and horror, so those also feature in my writing. I’ll save a deep dive into my influences for another day.
In short, I write upmarket science fiction mostly in the subgenres of cyberpunk, biopunk, climate fiction, and dying Earth with elements of the fantastical and Gothic/cosmic horror.
About Me
Lastly, I’ll round off this first post with a blurb about me. I was born and raised in the US but moved to Germany for a job in mid-2023. (No, I don’t speak German very well, but I’m trying and making slow gains).
I earned my degrees in geology and work as a research scientist/lab manager in my day job, where I study meteorites and star dust. I love science, obviously. There’s a reason I write science fiction after all!
